At Northwest, we’ve streamlined the admission process to help you get started quickly and easily. Please read the requirements for the MSEd. in Teaching History online, including what additional materials you need and where you should send them.

Admission Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
  • Teaching certificate

To apply for this program, you must meet these requirements:

  • Valid teaching certificate OR 2 years prior teaching with a valid teaching certificate OR enrolled in an alternative certification program
  • A minimum overall GPA of 2.75 on the undergraduate transcript OR a minimum overall GPA of 2.50 to 2.74 on the undergraduate transcript and a B in HIST 33601 in their first 7-week block

  • Documentation of ONE of the following:
    • 3.5 or higher on the analytical writing measure of the GRE OR
    • Successful completion of another master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least a 2.75 GPA OR
    • Writing sample (a unit lesson plan or historical research project of at least 10 pages)

For the online history teacher degree program, the curriculum is comprised of 10 courses (30 credit hours), including nine credits of education requirements, six credits of history requirements and 15 credits of history electives.

This course will focus on the development of skills related to finding, evaluating, analyzing, prioritizing, and integrating data sources for the improvement of student learning. Students will retrieve data, develop an action plan for improvement, and create a project demonstrating proficiency in data literacy.

Students who complete this course understand and demonstrate the capability to promote the success and well-being of each student by applying the knowledge, skills and commitments necessary for equitable protocols for student support, equitable access in a least restrictive environment, responsive practices for culturally responsive teaching and leadership, and a supportive school culture that ensures each student and family is treated fairly. 27 hours field experience embedded in the course.

This course will provide students with the tools necessary to stay current on trends and issues in curriculum, instruction and assessment. Special topics in curricular design, instructional strategies, assessment and professional development will be explored. Professional ethics as it relates to the role of the curriculum leader will be analyzed and applied.

This graduate-level course offers an in-depth exploration of historical research methods, historiography, and the ethical dimensions inherent in historical practice. Designed for aspiring historians and history-teachers, the course emphasizes the development of rigorous research skills, critical evaluation of historical interpretations, and responsible engagement with historical sources and narratives.

In this graduate-level course, students delve into contemporary challenges and opportunities in secondary social studies education. Using state and national standards as a guide, they examine pedagogy, curriculum design, ethics, and cultural responsiveness. Central to the course is the creation of a teaching portfolio, the capstone assessment for both this course and the overall program. This portfolio will reflect students' mastery and their commitment to inclusive, effective education. Prerequisite: HIST 33601

This course surveys the social and cultural history of the United States in the 1790s. During this tumultuous decade inhabitants of the nation debated the future of race-based slavery, died in yellow fever epidemics, discussed the role of women, and tried to come to some consensus about what it meant to be an American. Their questions and answers as well as successes and failures continue to shape the United States in the twenty-first century.

This course focuses on major themes in American sports history, including questions of competition, patriotism, identity, and exclusion. Students will examine the significance of sport in US history and will also use sport as a way to explore significant themes, events, and controversies in American history.

Throughout human history non-human actors from plants and animals to weather and geography have shaped the human experience. Environmental historians explore how human have responded to these conditions and how they made sense out of them in their own cultural and scientific context.

This course explores the profound impact of warfare on European society during the tumultuous 20th century. Students will examine the complex interplay between military conflicts, social dynamics, and cultural transformations that shaped Europe during this period, studying the experiences of soldiers and civilians, the evolution of warfare tactics, and the lasting consequences of conflict through a critical examination of primary sources and historical scholarship.
