At Northwest, we’ve streamlined the admission process to help you get started quickly and easily. Please read the requirements for the MSEd. in Teaching History online, including what additional materials you need and where you should send them.
Admission Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
- GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale
- Teaching certificate
To apply for this program, you must meet these requirements:
- Valid teaching certificate OR 2 years prior teaching with a valid teaching certificate OR enrolled in an alternative certification program
- A minimum overall GPA of 2.75 on the undergraduate transcript OR a minimum overall GPA of 2.50 to 2.74 on the undergraduate transcript and a B in HIST 33601 in their first 7-week block
- Documentation of ONE of the following:
- 3.5 or higher on the analytical writing measure of the GRE OR
- Successful completion of another master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least a 2.75 GPA OR
- Writing sample (a unit lesson plan or historical research project of at least 10 pages)

For the online history teacher degree program, the curriculum is comprised of 10 courses (30 credit hours), including nine credits of education requirements, six credits of history requirements and 15 credits of history electives.
Program Portfolio Requirement
The Program Portfolio is the pinnacle assessment for students in the M.S. Ed. Teaching History program. This portfolio integrates lesson plans, student assessments, teaching reflections, and a unique research component centered on an educational inquiry project in history education. Together, these elements spotlight a student's proficiency in subject matter, pedagogical strategies, and professional skills. Rigorously evaluated by faculty as part of the HIST 33680 course in the program's final term/block, successful portfolio approval is essential for graduation and signifies a student's readiness to excel as a history educator.
