"I want students to realize that what they are learning in the RN to BSN program will not only make them better nurses but also improve the quality of care that is provided, making healthcare better overall."

Degrees Held:

  • DNP – American Sentinel University, 2024
  • MSN – Western Governors University, 2012
  • BSN – Missouri Western State University, 2000

Career Highlights:

My career started in medical-surgical nursing in critical-access hospitals before I transitioned to clinical instruction and then full-time teaching in pre-licensure programs at a community college. I have spent the last 18 years in academia along with PRN work. I now teach full time in the RN to BSN program at Northwest.

  • Which online degree program(s) do you teach?

    RN to BSN

  • What inspired you to pursue a career in teaching, and what continues to motivate you in this profession?

I was inspired to pursue teaching as a new nurse assisting students with tasks and procedures. The "light bulb" moments of students understanding a concept are what motivated me to continue teaching in both pre-licensure and post-licensure programs.

  • How has teaching online changed your perspective on education and student success?

Teaching online, especially in the age of AI, has led me to rethink how to provide students with information and tools to be successful while encouraging them to use their own critical-thinking skills in their coursework. It is an evolving process, and I am encouraged to explore various online platforms to assist students with meeting their educational goals.

  • In what ways do you connect with online students?

I engage with my online students via virtual meetings, calls, emails and individualized feedback on assignments. I participate in the discussion forums to help students connect course materials with nursing practice. I use a variety of technologies, including AI and web platforms, to stay connected with my students.

  • What do you want your students to take away from your courses?

I want students to realize that what they are learning in the RN to BSN program will not only make them better nurses but also improve the quality of care that is provided, making healthcare better overall.

  • In your opinion, what attributes or skills are essential for success in your area of expertise?

Attributes essential for success include having a positive mindset and developing resilience.

Here's a link to my DNP project on nursing student resilience.

  • What advice do you have for students to succeed in an online learning environment? What’s one thing you wish more online students knew before starting your course?

Stay motivated. It is easy to ignore what you need to do in online coursework because you are not tied to a physical classroom. Set aside a little bit of time each day to "go to school" to be successful. I completed two online degrees with a family and full-time work. It can be stressful, but if you always keep the end goal in mind, it goes by quickly and the outcome is always better than not getting started.

  • What’s your go-to way to lift your spirits?

I go outside to rejuvenate, and I love to garden and craft. My new hobby is crocheting.

I love to travel, snow ski and go camping.

  • What is one book you believe everyone should read?

Reading is my favorite hobby, but I don't have one book everyone should read. Just read something that resonates with you.
