Assistant Professor

faculty Jason McCain

"So much of psychology is really applicable, but most people only think of "clinical" applications when they think of psychology!"

Degrees Held:

  • Ph.D. – Texas A&M University-Commerce, 2018

Career Highlights:

My degree is in educational psychology, but I also have a strong interest in cognitive and social psychology. In educational psychology, my focus is on student success and experiences at the post-secondary (college/university) level. My interests in cognitive psychology are broad but include memory and metacognition. My social psychology interests are primarily focused on the concept of objectification and how this phenomenon is experienced differently by various groups of individuals.

  • In which online program(s) do you teach?

  • Which classes do you teach online?

    Cognitive Psychology

  • In what ways do you connect with online students?

    Zoom and email.

  • What do you want your students to take away from class?

At the end of our course, students should be able to describe the basic principles of cognitive psychology (e.g., how do people learn, remember, and reason), develop the ability to create a hypothesis about the outcomes of hypothetical cognitive psychology research (e.g., if RTs went up, instead of down, it would mean...), and to evaluate how the presented information and activities supports and furthers students' foundational knowledge about cognitive psychology.

  • Why did you start teaching?

Teaching is a great way to help others and to positively impact the future of our society.

  • What advice would you give to your online students?

Always give your fullest on every assignment/activity, and always consider how the presented information can be "applied" in your everyday experiences. So much of psychology is really applicable, but most people only think of "clinical" applications when they think of psychology!

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in the field in which you teach?

    Adaptability, self-reflection and empathy.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

The seventh book of the Harry Potter series (so much better than the movie!).

  • What do you do when you need a laugh?

Internet cat videos, memes or Gabriel Iglesias.

  • Tell us something your students may not know about you:

I really enjoy astrophotography (taking pictures of the night sky). I once used a telescope and a DSLR camera to take over two dozen images of our moon and then combined them into a poster-sized image.
