Educating others in nursing
Working in various areas of nursing has really helped me become a better educator, and I feel comfortable teaching in almost any subject.
Which online degree program(s) do you teach?
In what ways do you connect with online students?
I am always open to emails, phone calls, text messages or video conference meetings. I am open to new communication ideas, as well, if students have a different preference.
What do you want your students to take away from class?
I want students to be able to critically think through situations, use the knowledge they have learned to apply it to their work environment and model leadership in their workplace.
Why did you start teaching?
I began precepting new nurses in 2009, started teaching in the clinical setting in 2015 and began teaching nursing full-time in 2016.
What advice would you give to your online students?
Get organized early in the week and check into your course each day to keep up with updates or announcements. Set aside time in your week to complete your studies and make it a priority. Always reach out to your professor with questions.
What is the value of a BSN for a working nurse?
A BSN–prepared nurse obtains much more than just a diploma. BSN nurses are prepared with qualities like communication, critical thinking and leadership. The qualities are essential when nurses want to move into leadership or management roles. According to the American Associate of the Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2020), "...BSN nurses also have better patient outcomes, including lower mortality rates and lower failure to rescue rates."
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
"Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey. I love every aspect of finance, but no one really taught me about this in school. This book teaches you everything you need to know and more.
What do you do when you need a laugh?
Gather with family – they always keep me laughing. We love card games and are very competitive.
Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students might not know about you.
My husband and I own a mum and pumpkin farm in Higginsville, MO. We grow 20,000 plants and also have Nigerian Dwarf Goats. We love the beautiful flowers and playing with the baby goats each year, and we love the joy they bring to others.
