Which online degree program(s) do you teach?

  • In what ways do you connect with online students?

For the strength-based class, we look to challenge students to bring strength-based concepts into their place of practice. This is done through applied assignments that draw connections between course material and real-world practice. Threaded discussions, online lectures and videos, and an applied writing project are used to make these connections.

  • What do you want your students to take away from class?

The primary takeaway from the class is for learners to examine their own practice philosophies and identify the potential benefits of integrating a strengths approach into their daily work.

  • Why did you start teaching?

It was a way for me to engage in the academic environment of learning and discovery while still contributing directly to the field.

  • What advice would you give to your online students?

Set value-driven goals and action steps for achieving them, even down to weekly tasks of class. If you keep your values and associated goals in mind, it will help you get through difficult times and ensure you are spending your time on what's important.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful in the field in which you teach?

In the therapeutic recreation world, these qualities are empathy, commitment to excellence and organization.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

"Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl

  • What do you do when you need a laugh?

    Spend time with my kids.
