Assistant Professor of Mathematics
"Mathematics is more than finding the right answer; it is a way of thinking, questioning, connecting ideas and making sense of the world around us."
Degrees Held:
I hold a Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Mathematics and Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC).
I have also completed professional preparation in college teaching and career development and online teaching through UMKC.
Career Highlights:
Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to teach mathematics to students with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and learning needs. My teaching has focused on helping students develop strong mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills and confidence. I particularly value connecting mathematical concepts to real-world situations so students can see the relevance of what they are learning. I have also enjoyed supporting students in online learning environments and using technology to create meaningful opportunities for interaction, collaboration and mathematical discussion.
Additionally, my research interests include mathematics education, student experiences in STEM, mathematics anxiety, motivation, confidence and the use of data and machine learning to better understand students’ mathematical experiences.
Why did you start teaching?
I started teaching because I believe mathematics can become a powerful tool for understanding the world when students are given opportunities to explore ideas rather than simply memorize procedures. Throughout my teaching experience, one of the most rewarding moments has been watching a student gain confidence in their mathematical ability.
My background in both applied mathematics and curriculum and instruction has strengthened my belief that effective teaching is not only about knowing mathematics, but also about understanding how students learn mathematics and finding ways to help them connect mathematical ideas to their own experiences.
What advice would you give to your online students?
My advice is to be consistent, stay curious and do not be afraid to ask questions. Online learning gives students flexibility, but it also requires responsibility and active participation.
In mathematics, it is especially important to focus on understanding the reasoning behind a solution rather than simply obtaining the correct answer. Mistakes are a natural and valuable part of learning. If something does not make sense, ask questions, revisit the problem and try another approach. Most importantly, remember that mathematical confidence develops through practice, persistence and meaningful engagement.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
"Number Talks" by Sherry Parrish. I recommend this book because it highlights the importance of mathematical thinking, flexible strategies and meaningful classroom conversations. It encourages students to explain their reasoning and learn from different approaches, which reflects my belief that mathematics is not just about getting the right answer but also about understanding and communicating the thinking behind it.
What do you do when you need a laugh?
I enjoy spending time with family and friends. Taking a moment to step away from my busy schedule and enjoying the simple, humorous moments in life helps me relax, recharge and return to my work with a fresh perspective.
What qualities make someone particularly successful as an educator?
I believe successful educators are patient, approachable, compassionate, knowledgeable, adaptable and lifelong learners. A good educator listens to students, values their perspectives and creates an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes.
For me, effective teaching also means being willing to reflect and improve. Every group of students is different, so educators need to be flexible and responsive to their students’ needs. Ultimately, I believe the most successful educators are those who genuinely care about their students’ learning and help them develop not only knowledge, but also confidence, curiosity and the ability to think independently.
