Which online degree program(s) do you teach?

B.S. in Accounting – Public

  • Why did you start teaching?

My passion for teaching began while I was a graduate assistant at Northwest Missouri State University and had the opportunity to teach classes. I enjoy helping students work through challenging concepts and seeing the sense of accomplishment that comes when those concepts finally make sense. As an accounting instructor, I aim to help students see accounting as more than numbers by demonstrating its role in decision-making and understanding the world of business. Watching students gain confidence, apply what they learn and reach their goals makes teaching incredibly rewarding. I am especially grateful to have a career that allows me to share my enthusiasm for a subject I truly love.

  • What advice would you give to your online students?

Online learning offers flexibility, but flexibility is not the same as easy. The students who succeed are not necessarily the smartest; they are the ones who stay organized, ask questions and consistently put in the effort week after week.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

“The Miracle Morning” by Hal Elrod

  • What do you do when you need a laugh?

Spending time with family, watching Nate Bargatze (comedian) and finding humor in everyday situations always helps me laugh and keep things in perspective.

  • What qualities make someone particularly successful as an educator?

Successful educators genuinely care about their students and want to see them succeed. They create a supportive learning environment while also holding students accountable, setting clear expectations and encouraging them to take ownership of their learning. Education is about more than teaching course content. It is also about helping students develop the professionalism, work ethic, critical thinking and problem-solving skills they will need throughout their careers.

The best educators are also lifelong learners. They stay current in their field, explore new ideas and continuously look for ways to improve their teaching and better connect with students. Educators should be open to growth and willing to adapt to the diverse needs and learning styles of their students. After all, education is a lifelong journey for both students and educators.
