Deepen Your Special Education Expertise

Special education teachers carry most of the same responsibilities as other classroom teachers — and many more. From additional testing, assessment, reporting and analyzing to working with anxious and worried parents, the administrative and interpersonal responsibilities of a special education teacher are often overwhelming. Finding time, patience and joy in the everyday can be a challenge.

Educators with a passion for special education, however, understand those challenges and opportunities. And those who want to be better equipped for success will find techniques and strategies that work when they earn a Master of Science in Education degree in Special Education.

Northwest Missouri State University has a fully online program for educators who want to earn a master’s degree in special education while maintaining a full-time job. This program is designed to prepare educators to teach students with mild and moderate disabilities across a variety of school settings and with exceptionalities across a range of learning experiences.

Gain Experience in the Field

This 100% online master’s degree program gives students the opportunity to gain field experience, embedded in the coursework. Students will collaborate with stakeholders and learn culturally responsive ways to address the needs of individuals with exceptionalities.

Students will also discover how to create safe, inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments so that individuals with exceptionalities become active and effective learners. Evidence-based instructional strategies will prepare educators to help their students develop emotional well-being, positive social interactions, and self-determination.

Well-Prepared and Certified to Teach Students with Mild to Moderate Disabilities

The data-driven instruction using current, innovative evidence-based strategies, presented in rigorous coursework focuses on the most effective methods and strategies used in teaching K-12 students with mild to moderate learning, cognitive, emotional and physical disabilities and other health impairments.

In addition to being well-prepared to teach in a variety of settings, this all-online program is designed to provide the coursework and experiences you need to apply for certification.

When Parents Ask, “What Happens When My Child Grows Up?”

Parents who have children with learning disabilities, such as being on the autism spectrum, are not just concerned with their education through high school. They also want to know what practical, post-education assistance will be available to their child.

The time to prepare these students for life after school is while they are still in it. In Northwest’s master’s program in special education, participants gain an understanding of principles, methods and procedures of transition, as well as career education for students with disabilities. In the course titled Transition/Career Education for Students with Disabilities: Process and Resources, students will learn “the process for organizing a program to assist youth in choosing, preparing for, entering upon, and making adjustments in transitioning across childhood and from school to post-secondary options.”
